Hens in reward for bright girl students

DHRUBA DANGAL
SINDHUPALCHOK, March 8: A school in Sindhupalchok district has devised a unique way of encouraging poor and intelligent girl students.

Even as other schools distribute note books, pens, pencils or cash to bright students, Sansarimai Secondary School in Thulo Pakhar village provides its promising students with hens.

"If we give them money, they would not take long to spend it," says Rubi Lama, principal of the school. "But if we provide them with hens, they can make money by selling eggs laid by hens."

Until last year, like other schools, Sansarimai School, too, used to distribute cash and stationery items to students. Having realized that cash-scholarships did not really help students do well, the school came up with the idea of "productive scholarship".

This year, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, the school awarded four of its girl students with hens of Giriraj species.

"A Giriraj hen can produce 30 eggs every month," says Lama. "Students can make Rs 300 every month by selling these eggs. They can finance their study with the money earned from eggs."

At a recently-held anniversary function, Lama asked students Rejina Karki, Mankumari Tamang, Gita Acharya and Barsha Gurung -- who were awarded with hens -- to well-feed hens so that they get more eggs.

As most of students at Sansarimai School belong to indigenous and Dalit groups, they drop out midway.
